How to host a tiki night

A home tiki night is two drinks you can repeat, one record that can play through dinner, and glassware that is already clean.

Pick a guest count before you pick a punch bowl

Four people is a mixing night. Ten people is a pitcher night. Twenty is a punch-bowl night and a different shopping list. If you have not hosted yet, plan for four: two drinks on the menu, mugs for everyone, and a speaker. The Friday-for-4 playbook is the worked example; this page is the method.

Tell people what you are pouring. “Tiki night” means nothing to a guest who wanted beer. “Mai Tais and Jungle Birds, plus ginger beer if you want a break” lets them eat first and not show up starved.

Two drinks, batched juice, rum from the liquor store

A Mai Tai (Jamaican rum, aged rum, lime, orange curaçao, orgeat) plus a Jungle Bird (dark rum, Campari, pineapple, lime, simple) covers the sweet drink and the bitter one. Pour the Jungle Bird a little lighter if someone claims they hate rum. For a patio, swap in Painkillers and skip the shaker work.

Juice the limes before anyone arrives. Pre-batch the non-alcoholic parts of the Jungle Bird (pineapple, lime, simple) in a bottle in the fridge. Shake with rum and Campari to order so ice stays in the glass, not the pitcher. Buy rum, Campari, and curaçao at a liquor store—this site does not link those.

One album, then another

Put Exotica or Taboo on while people walk in. If talk gets loud, switch to something with a backbeat (surf, or a later exotica revival) instead of turning the same quiet record up until it distorts. Whatever already plays in the room is enough; a turntable is a second hobby.

Night-of, in order

Ice in a bucket, not a tray you have to refill from the freezer every twenty minutes. Mugs rinsed and on the cart. Garnishes (mint, pineapple wedges) in a small bowl. Lights dimmed, strings on. Then the first round, then food, then the second drink. If you are still shopping for masks at 6 p.m., skip the masks.
