Walk, Don't Run

Don Wilson and Bob Bogle started as a Tacoma instrumental duo in 1958; by 1960 the Ventures were cutting for Liberty’s Dolton subsidiary. Walk, Don’t Run, their debut LP, arrived December 5, 1960, largely tracked at Joe Boles’s home studio in Seattle after the title single took off.

The Johnny Smith jazz tune, sped up and given clean reverb guitar, became a national hit. The album mixed covers and originals, peaked at No. 11 on Billboard, and earned the band its first gold record for more than half a million copies sold.

Later surf bands treated the clean, hooky guitar tone as homework. No vocals compete with bar chatter, and the tempo stays up without turning into a contest PA — useful mid-century energy between Denny dinners and Dale volume.
